Starlink Mini Travel Kit Review

The Mini is Starlink’s portable travel antenna, so it’s no surprise that companies are coming out with all sorts of cases and bags for it. Starlink’s version is called the Mini Travel Kit. It includes a carrying bag, accessory pouch, and a protective bumper case for the Starlink Mini.

Starlink Mini Travel Kit

I bought the Mini Travel Kit as soon as it was released, and headed to the mountains of Colorado to test it out. Find out if it’s worth it over 3rd party case options in this review.

Price and Features

Price Update: I originally purchased the Mini Travel Kit from Starlink for $63. After I published the review, Starlink updated the price of the kit to $45. Maybe they read the blog? I’ve updated the price in this post, but the following review is based on the original $63 price tag that I paid for the kit.

The Starlink Mini Travel Kit is available in the Starlink shop for $45. The kit includes a few accessories that make traveling with your Starlink Mini a bit safer. You get a bumper case for the dish, which offers some protection from drops. You also get an accessory pouch to store your cable and power supply. The Mini and the accessory pouch fit inside the final piece, a carrying bag with drawstrings and a handle.

Starlink says the kit is designed to protect your Mini when traveling. The idea is that the bumper case protects the corners of the Mini antenna from minor drops and bumps, while the carrying bag prevents scratches and scuffs. The bag also keeps everything in your Mini kit organized and ready to go.

The design of the Mini Travel Kit reminds me a lot of the Starlink Standard Backpack that I previously reviewed. The carrying bag and accessory pouch have the same color scheme and Starlink logo design.

Starlink Mini Accessory Pouch
The accessory pouch holds all the Starlink Mini cables and accessories.

Underwhelming is how I would describe the quality of the kit. The carrying bag and accessory pouch are made out of nylon, which is reasonably dust and water resistant. The tags inside the bags indicate they are made in China, which I think is a first for Starlink. If you ignore the cool looking Starlink logo, the carrying bag and accessory pouch could pass for any cheap Amazon product.

The accessory pouch uses a couple zippers to keep your cables and other Mini accessories secure. You can fit several accessories in the pouch. During my testing I had the Mini USB-C cable and 12V car adapter stored inside. You could definitely fit a small power bank, or perhaps the Mini’s AC wall adapter and DC power cable.

The carrying bag has one large loop handle at the top. It has a single compartment which is accessible with a drawstring closure system. The bag is designed to hold your Starlink Mini plus any accessories you can fit inside. I wish there were more straps and gear loops, but I don’t think Starlink intended this carrying case to be for extreme adventuring. You’re not going to be able to strap this bag on your backpack or motorcycle, unlike the 4ROAM Adventure Bag I reviewed on the YouTube channel.

What I Liked

I want to start off with the positives. I’m really glad Starlink is investing in travel accessories for the Starlink Mini. They’ve released several awesome accessories lately, like the Mini Car Adapter. The Mini dish is one of those tech toys you want to customize and kit out for your specific needs, and Starlink seems to understand that. They could just leave everything up to 3rd party companies, but it’s nice to have OEM products available.

The bumper case in the Mini Travel Kit is really nice to have. To be honest I never really thought about this type of case for the antenna, but now that I have it installed, it won’t be coming off. It’s one of those things you can install once and never think about again. It provides some protection against drops, scuffs, and scratches. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve almost dropped my Mini while loading it my camper, vehicle, or backpack.

The bumper case snaps around the edge of the Mini dish.

Another cool feature is that the material allows for the Mini to operate while inside the carrying bag. That makes deploying your Mini kit super simple. Just grab your power cable, plug in the Mini, and set the entire kit on the ground with a clear view of the sky. Your Mini stays protected from the elements.

The Bad Stuff

Unfortunately, I could really only find a few nice things to say about the Mini Travel Kit. The bad stuff starts with the price. At $45, it’s incredibly expensive for a couple of cheap nylon bags that are made in China. Besides the bumper case, which I wish was sold individually, there isn’t anything special or innovative about the kit. For half the price you can get a more functional Starlink Mini travel case from Amazon.

I don’t like that the carrying bag has drawstrings instead of a zipper. It just adds to the cheap feeling of the kit, and isn’t the most secure way to keep the Mini or your accessories inside the bag. I can’t think of any practical reason to use drawstrings. I’m sure it was a cost-cutting design choice.

I wish the carrying bag had more straps. There should be a shoulder strap, or at least a couple of loops to add your own. Really the only thing you get is a short little carrying handle. The Mini Travel Kit isn’t suitable for strapping to a backpack or anything like that. It’s really just designed for light duty storage and organization.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I can’t really recommend the Starlink Mini Travel Kit to anyone. As a functional case and carrying bag, the Mini Travel Kit fails to deliver any real value for the steep $45 price tag. You can find cheaper and better options from 3rd party companies.

The best part of the Mini Travel Kit is the bumper case that is included. I wish Starlink would offer it separately, because that’s an accessory that I think people would be interested in. It’s just a shame you have to shell out so much to get it in this kit.

I’d love to hear your feedback on this review. What are you using to protect and organize your Starlink Mini?
